After five rounds of
play, Top Seed, Grandmaster Lenier Dominguez of Cuba
holds a clear 1 point lead with 5 points in the 2007
Central America & Caribbean Zonal Chess Championship
currently being played in Santo Domingo, Dominican
Republic.
The Cuban Grandmaster
seems well on the way to capturing one of the two World
Cup qualifying places at stake for the 2007 World Chess
Cup in
Khanty-Mansyisk, Russia, later this year. He his the
only player not to have drop a point so far in the
Championship, having won against International Masters
Leon Manual of Mexico and Leonardo Valdes of Costa Rica,
FIDE Master Carlo Vittorino of Colombia, Winston Boada
of Venezuela and Eddy De Los Santos of the Dominica
Republic.

Tied in second position on 4 points are International
Master Leon Manual of Mexico and Grandmasters Lazaro
Bruzon of Cuba and Juan Carlos Gonzalez of Mexico.
Leon created a bit of a surprise in the tournament by
beat compatriot Grandmaster Gonzalez and Bruzon the
Number 2 Seed found it difficult to have his way
conceding two draws to International Masters Eduardo
Iturrizaga of Venezuela and Brenal Gonzalez of Costa
Rica.
Barbados National Champion Terry Farley, the only player
from the English Speaking Caribbean at these
Championships, ran into hard times after his good first
round start losing three matches in a row against
Grandmaster Bruzon and International Masters Iturizzaga
and Mendoza; the Mendoza loss being particularly painful
as Farley had the better position.
Farley however recovered in round 5 scoring a fighting
win against Dominican Republic International Master Jose
Dominguez.

In
the Women’s Section, the Cubans hold the top two spots
with Woman Grandmasters Maritza Arribas on 4 ½ points
and Sulennis Pina on 4.
With
the two Cubans still to play each other and 9 rounds of
action to come, Colombian Martha Mateus who shares 3rd
position with Irene Han of Venezuela must fancy her
chances going forward having already drawn against Pina
and played Han, a match she lost. Han on the other hand
still has Arribas and Pina to play.
