Girls emerge in AIB Chess

Two juniors, Lexi Browne of Holy Name Preparatory School and Andre Sims of Fatima College took the top spots in the AIB One Day Rapid Play Chess tournament played at St. Augustine Girls’ High School on Saturday.

Lexi Browne played unbeaten in the Under 1050 Rated group up to round 6 when she dropped a point in the final round to Sachin Harripersad of Grant Memorial Presbyterian School ending the 7 round contest tied on 6 points with her school mate Ethan Tardieu who also finished with 6 points losing to Browne in round 5. However, Browne emerged victorious after the application of the tiebreak system. Marielle Sims of Maria Regina Grade School came in fourth followed by Jon-Raphael Sealy of Malabar R.C. School in fifth place.

The Over 1050 Rated group, contested by 26 players, ended with Fatima College’s Andre Sims and Videsh Ramsaroop of Holy Cross College tied on 4.5 points. However, Sims edged out Ramsaroop on tiebreak to win with Ramsaroop settling for 2nd place. Maria Regina Grade School’s Gabriella Johnson who won this division in last month’s contest came in 3rd with 4 points followed by Brian Dixon of St. Mary’s College in 4th and Andrew Lakhan of Holy Cross College in 5th place.

National Champion Ryan Harper won the Open section which is a new feature added by the Chess Foundation to its monthly events. Harper topped the 6 player round robin tournament scoring 4.5 points followed by Kevin Cupid, 2nd and Ronnie Chung 3rd.

Saturday’s tournament was the second in a series of monthly events organized by the T&T Chess Foundation and Sponsored by Agostini Insurance Brokers. The competition attracted 75 players of whom 15 were girls. Four girls were outstanding and were among the prize winners: Lexi Browne, Gabriella Johnson, Marielle Sims and Andria Joseph.
