Fitzpatrick, Sorzano, Ramakrishnan shine at Spiritual Baptist Liberation  Day Open Chess  

15 Year old Chantal Fitzpatrick, National Ladies Chess Champion and National under 16 Junior Chess Champion took top honours at the Spiritual Baptist Liberation Day Open Junior Chess tournament held on March 30th at Bishop’s Anstey High School in Port of Spain.  

Fitzpatrick, a Form 3 student of Providence Girls’ Secondary School played unbeaten in this 5 round event drawing one game with Esan Wiltshire of QRC and defeating her other four opponents Rafael Guerrero of St. Mary’s College, Kevin Cupid of Holy Cross College, Kiran Maharaj of Trinity College East and Jayson Paul of QRC. Fitzpatrick ended with 4.5 points out of 5. Kevin Cupid and 10 year old Keron Cabralis trailed Fitzpatrick in second and third places respectively. 

Kevin Sorzano of Maple Leaf International School and Prithvi Ramakrishnan of the International School of Port of Spain won the Beginners and Intermediate divisions respectively.

Sorzano ended with 6 points to take top spot out of a field of 38 players in the Beginners division edging out Garth Williams of Richmond Street Boys with a higher tiebreak. Williams had to settle for second place with 6 points followed by his schoolmate Shaquille Mc Dowald of Richmond Street Boys with 5.5 points.  

Prithvi Ramakrishnan of the International School of Port of Spain played unbeaten out of a field of 40 players to win the Intermediate division with 4.5 points.

  

Ramakrishnan was held to a draw in round 4 by Kerry Singh of Presentation College but that was not enough to stop this native of India from clinching the title with a higher tiebreak from Jesse Rogers of Blackman’s Private School. Rogers had to settle for second spot with 4.5 points. In third place was Jordan Nunes of Holy Name Preparatory School with 4 points.

The tournament which attracted 90 players from West, East and South Trinidad was organised by the Trinidad and Tobago Chess Foundation. Other prize winners:
